2026 ESAANZ Essay Prize Competition

The European Studies Association of Australia and New Zealand proudly announces the 6th annual Undergraduate and Postgraduate ESSAY COMPETITION 2026.

The categories are:
1. Best two essays by an undergraduate student (2,000 – 4,000 words)
2. Best essay by an honours or postgraduate student (3,000 – 5,000 words)

Prizes:

• Book vouchers to the value of $100 (undergraduate) and $150 (postgraduate)
• A complimentary year’s membership to ESAANZ
• Winning papers will be considered for publication in the Australian and New Zealand Journal for European Studies (ANZJES).

Eligibility:

Essays eligible for submission must have been assessed as part of an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at an Australian or New Zealand tertiary institution in 2025 or 2026.

Essays from any discipline with a European issue are eligible – history, politics, law, economics, business, sociology, cultural studies, etc.

Essays will be judged by a panel of judges selected by ESAANZ.
