Dear ,

We are happy to share an event from the New Zealand Political Studies Association (NZPSA). The inaugural Environmental Politics & Policy Network series seminar for 2024 will be by Dr Christine Winter, University of Otago.

Dr Christine Winter, who is a Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Otago and Research Affiliate at the Sydney Environment Institute, researches the ways justice theory perpetuates colonial practices of domination, oppression and violence. Her key areas of interest are multispecies, environmental, indigenous, intergenerational and climate justice.

The seminar is titled "Why 'Land Back' is not Scary". In te reo Mãori, whenua, means Land; it also means placenta. While the idea of land as property seems to grant freedom, Winter argues it is freedom's phantom. 'Land back' is not scary because freedom and the future are found in relationships with Whenua/Land not ownership of land.
